We’re over half-way through Term 3 and it’s been so busy that we are only just stopping to fully reflect on Term 2.
We partnered with two whole schools from Grade 1-12 as well as blessing several other schools along the way. The goal? Creating space for honest, thoughtful, and hope-filled conversations about sex, relationships, and faith.
Here’s a glimpse into what Term 2 looked like at Big Kids’ Table…
Heathdale Christian College Primary, Werribee
We had the privilege of spending a week with the primary students at Heathdale Christian College, Werribee Campus, working with students from Grade 1 through to Grade 6. It was especially encouraging to return for the third year in a row and see how much the students have grown in both their understanding of these important topics and their confidence to discuss them in healthy, age-appropriate ways.
The Grade 1 and 2 students were eager to talk about how God made their bodies very good and what this means for treating themselves and others with respect. It was wonderful to see the Grade 4 students thoughtfully consider how they engage with the online world and identify ways they can use their safety plans when they encounter situations that make them feel unsafe online. The Grade 5 students did an excellent job building on the knowledge they developed with us two years ago, demonstrating a growing understanding of puberty and the changes happening in their bodies. The Grade 6 students engaged maturely in discussions about the impact of pornography on culture and explored practical strategies for keeping themselves safe.
Across all year levels, it was a joy to witness students asking thoughtful questions, sharing their insights and continuing to develop the knowledge and skills needed to navigate relationships, their bodies and the online world with confidence and wisdom.
Lighthouse Christian College, Queensland
In May, Georgia, Lauren, Joel and Bek travelled to Rockhampton, Queensland, to partner with Lighthouse Christian College for the second year in a row. It was such a joy to reconnect with the school community, recognising familiar faces and seeing students we had worked with the previous year.
There was something especially encouraging about continuing the conversations we’d begun. We unpacked healthy relationships and consent with secondary students while building on our primary workshops with children who were now a year older. It was a wonderful reminder that meaningful formation happens over time, and we were grateful to continue investing in these young people.
Lighthouse Christian College is a diverse school with an incredible staff team who care deeply about their students, their curriculum, and faithfully seeking God’s wisdom in all they do. Partnering with educators who are so committed to both excellence and discipleship made the week all the more rewarding.
During the trip, Lauren also had the opportunity to facilitate an Gender & Sexuality Roadmap workshop with Lighthouse Baptist Church, which meets on the school grounds. The session supported church leaders as they considered how to faithfully approach questions of theology, pastoral care and welcome for LGBTQ people within their community. This is a conversation we regularly have with churches across Australia, helping them navigate everything from current legislation to pastoral implications, while discerning what faithfulness and hospitality look like in their own unique context.
It was a full and demanding week, but one that left us incredibly thankful. We returned home tired, but with full hearts, grateful for the privilege of partnering with churches and schools as they seek to help young people flourish in the love and truth of Jesus.
Chario Christian College, Drouin Campus
The Year 9 students at Chairo Christian College Drouin Campus recently participated in a full-day workshop exploring relationships, consent and the impacts of pornography.
During the first half of the day, students examined what healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships look like, discussed the importance of consent, and practised setting and respecting personal boundaries. In the second half, students unpacked the harms of pornography on our heads, hearts and the world around us, considering its impact on individuals, relationships and society.
A particular highlight of the workshop was hearing students thoughtfully share what they wanted their peers to know about pornography’s impact. Reflections included,
“Porn impacts you more than you think. Even if you feel like it doesn’t affect you at the time”;
“My parents protected me online. I have never encountered porn on my feed. We can do the same for future generations. Protect them, support them, show that it’s wrong”;
and “I want to be able to talk to my friends about how much porn is affecting me. I think this session will help me do this.”
These insights demonstrated the students’ maturity, empathy and willingness to engage in meaningful conversations about topics that matter.
Plenty Valley Christian College, Year 5
The Grade 5 workshop at PVCC was an incredible experience. Despite their initial nerves and it being the second-to-last day of term, the young people were fully engaged and open throughout the session.
I had the opportunity to work with the girls’ group, which was especially meaningful. It was a privilege to spend time alongside these young women and create a space where they felt comfortable to participate and ask questions.
One moment that really stood out was when a young woman approached me at the end to ask a question about periods and the fear of using tampons. We were able to reassure her and this was a powerful reminder of how important these conversations are. When young people feel safe enough to ask honest questions, it highlights the real impact of education in building confidence, empowerment, and hope.
